Jaguars in Sight for Oakland Men's Basketball

ROCHESTER, Mich. – Oakland University Men's Basketball hits the road for a four-game stretch starting with IUPUI on Thursday, January 19 at 7:00 pm at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum on ESPN+. The "Voice of the Golden Grizzlies" Neal Ruhl will be on the call through the Audacy App.

Youngstown State snapped Oakland's five-game winning streak via an 85-69 score at the Athletics Center O'rena last Saturday. Jalen Moore dropped 20 points and a team-leading seven assists while Rocket Watts blasted off to 13 and four rebounds. Trey Townsend added ten points to the scoring column and a team-high eight rebounds.

Townsend still leads the squad in points per game with 16.6 while Moore is vaulting up that category with 14.6. Moore has put up three 20-point games in the last five contests including a 25-point performance against Green Bay.

Among the Horizon League, Townsend is still fourth in field goal percentage at .516 (130-252) to lead Oakland among the top 12 ranked. Blake Lampman currently sits fifth in the three-point field goal percentage at .350 (43-123) with an average of 2.7 per game, third in #HLMBB.

Moore is not only first in the conference in assists per game with 5.8, the Cloverdale, Indiana native sits 17th among active NCAA Division I players, tied for 29th in total assists on the year with 93.

Oakland and Youngstown State's January 27 contest in Ohio has been picked up by ESPN2, the second national-televised ESPN game for the Golden Grizzlies this season. Tipoff is slated for 9:00 pm ET.

Townsend was named to the Lou Henson Award Watchlist on November 22 as one of four #HLMBB student-athletes listed.

Moore was the lone Golden Grizzly named to the Preseason #HLMBB All-League Team honor with OU predicted fourth with two first-place votes in the preseason poll as Purdue Fort Wayne and Northern Kentucky tied for the top honor. The Horizon League and ESPN released the annual wildcard selections for national telecasts with Oakland on four of the five potential selected dates, denoted on the team's schedule page and the game notes.

Head Coach Greg Kampe enters his 39th season at the helm for Oakland University as the second-longest tenured coach in NCAA Division I basketball behind Jim Boeheim from Syracuse, who is in his 42nd season. Kampe has posted a 669-518 (56.8%) career record.

Michigan State was recently ranked No. 12 in the latest AP Top 25 poll as the only ranked non-conference opponent the Golden Grizzlies will potentially see. Toledo came close with a receiving vote ranking ahead of the two team's matchup on November 16.

The early signing period has come for OU as Aundre Polk will join the team on The Blacktop in the fall of 2023. Polk is a former MAC All-Freshman Team member at Central Michigan.

SCOUTING REPORT

IUPUI

The Jaguars are currently last in the #HLMBB standings with a record of 0-8 in league play, 3-16 overall with the team's only wins coming against two NCAA Division III opponents (Franklin and Spalding) and a transitional NCAA Division I squad (Texas A&M-Commerce).

Coming off an 89-54 defeat at Cleveland State, Jlynn Counter leads the Jags in scoring with 12.6 points per contest with Bryce Monroe trailing by only 0.6 at 12.0. Chris Osten is good for 6.3 boards per game as well just ahead of Counter at 3.9.

The Jags have not won a game since December 20, going 0-6 in that stretch to Northern Kentucky, Wright State, Youngstown State, Robert Morris, Purdue Fort Wayne, and the aforementioned Cleveland State.

Dating back to 1975, Oakland holds a 30-20 edge over the Jaguars with the Golden Grizzlies' winning streak going to two games.

The last time these two met, Oakland bested a depleted IUPUI roster with five active players in the first round of the 2022 Keeps #HLMBB Tournament on March 1.
