GOLDEN GRIZZLIES BATTLE VIKINGS FOR SENIOR DAY WIN

ROCHESTER, Mich. – On senior day, Oakland University Men's Basketball vanquished Horizon League first-place team Cleveland State 65-57 at the Athletics Center O'rena on Saturday afternoon.

Jalen Moore took the rock around the entirety of the front court for an underhand layup to start things off for Oakland to answer CSU right away as Jamal Cain was able to follow up with a long two-pointer in transition to lead 4-3 just a minute and a half into the action.

OU would lead 7-6 into the first media timeout as Micah Parrish would hit an attempt from range. The Vikings would retake the lead off a tough layup before hitting a quick three-pointer to go up 10-7 with 13:15 remaining.

The game would hover around a two to four point edge in favor of the visiting Vikings as Cain would grab a board off a missed Oakland three-pointer for a strong layup, completing the and-one at the line.

At the 6:50 mark in the first half, Oakland was being outrebounded by CSU 19-8 as Moore would fly by four black jerseys on the way to the basket to bring the Vikings' lead down to two at 22-20. Cain would get Will Shepherd's rebound to finish the possession and tie things up at 22-22 before two CSU free throws would put them back ahead.

Both teams would clash on the glass with the game tied at multiple points with turnover after turnover for each squad. Blake Lampman answered a deep ball from Cleveland State as things were still tight, tied at 27-27 with 1:40 left in the first half.

Parrish would effectively put Oakland above CSU as both teams went into the half at 30-27. To that point, Oakland was 15-5 when winning at halftime and was able to claw back in rebounds though the Vikings still led that category with 23-16.

Cain would be the only player in double digits after the first 20 minutes with 11 points and six rebounds as Parrish and Moore each posted eight, respectively. There were a total of eight turnovers for the Vikings as OU mishandled only five.

Out of the break, the Vikings would drain a three to tie it up in the first possession of the second frame at 30-30 before going on a 7-0 run as the Golden Grizzlies would not get a basket for the first 3:08 of the half.

The Golden Grizzlies would get back within one behind Parrish's efforts finishing at the rim in two straight possessions as the Detroit native took over scoring for Oakland with 14 to the point as OU would retake the lead with 13:00 with Moore's free throws.

Osei Price's three-pointer gave OU the lead once more as both teams started to battle back-and-forth at the midpoint of the frame at 43-42 with 10:42 left to go. It wasn't until a few Viking miscues that led to a couple big threes from Oakland, most notably by Parrish who allowed for Cain to be sent to the charity stripe to go up 52-44 with 7:12 remaining.

CSU had 16 turnovers to OU's 10 as the game ticked to 6:30 before Moore was sent to the free throw line off of the Vikings' eighth team foul for a ten point lead at 54-44. A few Oakland turnovers saw CSU bring themselves back to within four at 55-51 with 3:50 to go before a go-ahead dunk by Cain fueled the arena once more.

Moore and Cain would be sent to the free throw line, make both in each instance, as the Vikings would desperately try and get back in the game with a 6-0 run before a jumper by Cain with a hand in his face, effectively secured the win with a pair of free throws at the end for the 65-57 win.

On senior night, Cain walked away with his 15th double double of the year with 20 points and 13 rebounds as Parrish tied a career high of 20 points to go with his eight rebounds and team-high three assists.

Oakland forced 18 turnovers to score 25 points of the mishaps by the Vikings as the visiting team would edge OU in the rebound margin 37-32. This is the third-lowest points the Golden Grizzlies have scored in a win this year behind victories against Oklahoma State and Vermont.

This concludes the regular season for Oakland with a 19-11 mark overall, 12-7 in the Horizon League as the Golden Grizzlies locked up the fifth seed and a home game for the Keeps 2022 Horizon League Men's Basketball Tournament on Tuesday, March 1 at 8:00 p.m.
