OAKLAND ADVANCES TO SECOND ROUND OF KEEPS #HLMBB TOURNAMENT

Box Score ROCHESTER, Mich. – Oakland University Men's Basketball moves to the quarterfinal round of the Keeps 2022 #HLMBB  Tournament with a 70-58 victory inside the Athletics Center O'rena against No. 12 seed IUPUI Jaguars.

A shooting foul from Trey Townsend got OU on the board as neither team could score for the first 1:45 of the game as the Oxford native hit his free throw to put Oakland up 3-0 early before Blake Lampman followed up with a deep ball at the top of the arc.

At the first media timeout, the Golden Grizzlies led 6-2 behind Townsend and Lampman before Parrish's fly-by layup gave Oakland the six-point lead. Lampman then drained a shot from range as OU flew up by 11 points as the Jaguars responded with a three of their own at the 11:00 mark.

The Jaguars would answer a few baskets here and there as the game ticked to 8:50 with Parrish and Cain tallying points in the stat column as Osei Price got on the board with a corner-three of his own as OU was up 18-7.

Jalen Moore tossed in a lob to Jamal Cain as Oakland found itself up by nine points with 7:04 remaining as IUPUI failed to get it across the timeline for a ten second violation. Up until the 1:10 point, the Jaguars had crawled back within five as a shooting foul sent the Pontiac native to the line at 26-21.

This score would hold as both teams entered the locker room with the Golden Grizzlies shooting 38.5% (10-26) from the field and 25% (3-12) from range. Oakland outrebounded IUPUI through the first frame 18-15 all the while taking away six steals. Five Golden Grizzlies had scored at the break behind Lampman with eight and Cain with six.

A free throw by Cain started the first half as Moore and Parrish connected once more to put Oakland up by eight at 29-21 just over a minute into the half. The Jaguars' offense would continue to chomp into Oakland's lead to only be down by three before Moore was struck on the wrist for a shooting foul at 15:57.

Moore would hit a triple to get Oakland back up by six at 36-30 as Townsend would put a tough hook shot off the glass to go back up by eight with 13:54 remaining in regulation. A steal by Price led to a quick triple from Cain as the Golden Grizzlies continued to stay just above the Jaguars attack with 12:01 to go.

With under 10:00 to go, Lampman hit his third three-pointer of the game to go up by ten at 47-37. It wasn't until a one-and-one situation at the charity stripe where Moore would put Oakland up to its biggest lead of 12 before the Jaguars would respond.

At this point, Oakland continued to pound the rock inside and put up a 17-8 run as Price's exclamation point dunk found OU up 61-45 at the final media timeout of the game with 3:48 remaining in the half.

A Cain dish to Moore who threw it in the close-side corner to a Parrish three-pointer (ruled after the game had ended) would effectively end any Chance the Jaguars would have in returning in this first round game as IUPUI would call timeout with 59.9 seconds to go down 68-53.

Moore's free throws put Oakland's lead to 70-58 as the Golden Grizzlies would hang on until the final buzzer at the Athletics Center O'rena.

Cain would lead all scorers with 17 points while Moore's second-half effort would get him to the 16 point margin along with standing as the team's leading rebounder with seven to go with nine total assists.

Oakland would end things with a 45.5% (25-55) field goal percentage to IUPUI's 48.9% (23-47). The Jaguars would climb back to edge OU in boards with 30-28 though the Golden Grizzlies took seven offensive rebounds. IUPUI had 20 turnovers through the 40 minutes played as Oakland would put up 15 points off the mishandles.

The Golden Grizzlies will play in the Keeps 2022 #HLMBB Quarterfinal game against No. 4 seed Wright State at the Nutter Center on Thursday, March 3 at 7:00 p.m.
