ROCHESTER, Mich. – Announced by the team on Twitter on Wednesday, November 30, Oakland Golden Grizzlies sophomore infielder
Peter Jelenic will play for the Licking County (Ohio) Settlers in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League (GLSCL) in 2023.
Consisting of 13 teams from Indiana, Michigan and Ohio and split into the North and South Divisions, the GLSCL is comprised of current student-athletes, who are not paid as to maintain their National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) eligibility, and uses wooden bats to help prepare players for the professional level.
Hailing from Medina, Ohio, about two hours north of where the Settlers play their home games at Big Red Field on the campus of Denison University in Granville, the left-handed-hitting Jelenic saw time at both second base and shortstop for the Golden Grizzlies as a freshman in 2022, appearing in 20 games and slashing .214/.214/.286 with a double over 14 at-bats.
Playing their inaugural GLSCL season in 2006, the Settlers captured three consecutive league championships from 2012-14 and added a pair of runner-up finishes in 2010 and 2019. In 2022, Licking County took home the South Division title with a 22-16 record, but dropped both of their postseason contests.
GLSCL Opening Night for Jelenic and the Settlers is set for Tuesday, June 6, when they welcome in the Richmond (Indiana) Jazz at 7:05 p.m.
