CAIN'S 26-21 PERFORMANCE BOOSTS OAKLAND PAST GREEN BAY

GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Oakland University Men's Basketball team got back on the winning track Saturday afternoon as it downed University of Wisconsin-Green Bay 68-61 on the road at the Kress Center.

Jamal Cain's jumper led to a steal and dunk from Osei Price as leads were tied and exchanged early on. With a 43% (3-7) field goal percentage early on, it was low scoring on both ends as the Phoenix led 8-6 at the first media timeout.

Trey Townsend's long layup outside the green paint pulled Green Bay's lead back down to five at 17-12 with just under 12 minutes remaining in the first half. A pair of free throws from Cain and Moore with a Moore jumper in between started to pull in the eight point advantage that the Phoenix had built at the halfway point in the first half at 22-18.

Blake Lampman's three-pointer at 7:15 gave Oakland the lead for the first time in the game as Cain's free throws extended a 11-0 Golden Grizzlies run as the Phoenix hadn't scored in nearly four whole minutes.

A Moore steal that led to an alley-oop dunk for Cain continued to pour on points as the Phoenix offense stalled with Townsend's hook shot extended the run to 16-0 as Oakland led 30-22 with just under four minutes to go in the first.

Oakland improved itse field goal shooting to 12-25 (46%) from before as Townsend had already hit double-digit points with 13 as halftime approached with the Golden Grizzlies lead up by as much as 12. One final lob pass to Cain as the half expired put the exclamation point on the last few minutes as the Golden Grizzlies went into the half with the lead for the first time in two games at 38-26.

As the Golden Grizzlies shot 48.3% (14-29) from the field to Green Bay's 40.7% (11-27), Oakland held the lead behind 9-10 (90%) free throws while Townsend led all scorers with 13 points as Cain was just behind with 12 along with a team-high nine rebounds. Townsend was handing on a 100% (6-6) field goal percentage after the first 20 minutes.

Cain secured his eighth double double of the year after getting his own missed dunk, going to the line as Oakland was up 40-28.

The grad transfer continued to cause havoc as the Golden Grizzlies continued their offense propelled by both Cain and Townsend with Moore's assists coming to life in the second half. Cain's free throws gave him 20 points for the eighth time this season, his first since January 1.

At 11:30 to go in the second half with the lead to Oakland at 54-47, Townsend's fly by layup in the paint secured his fifth 20-plus point performance of the season as Oakland consistently led between 9-11 points with 9:00 to go in the game.

For the third time of the afternoon, Moore's lob pass to Cain stretched Oakland's lead to 60-49 with 7:55 to go in the game as Cain and Townsend were comfortably in double digits as Cain tied his career high in rebounds with 17 off a missed Phoenix shot.

The scoring stalled as neither team had scored in three-plus minutes before a pair of Phoenix free throws brought the overall lead back down to nine for Oakland at 60-51 with 3:19 to go in regulation.

As the stats continued to pile up for all Oakland players, the lights went off at the Kress Center for a Golden Grizzly bounce-back win to move to 8-1 in the Horizon League with the 68-61 win.

Cain secured his first 20-20 game as the team's leader in points with 26 and 21 rebounds while Townsend notched 23 points and six boards. Moore tallied 11 points of his own while dishing out seven assists as he and Price took away three steals apiece from Green Bay.

As a team, Oakland shot 36.4% (20-55) from the field and 10% (1-10) from range all while going 90% (27-30) from the free throw line. The Golden Grizzlies had 16 second chance points to GB's four as Cain took 21 of the team's 39 total rebounds.

Oakland will be home on Monday, January 24 at 7:00 p.m. as it welcomes the University of Michigan-Dearborn in non-conference action at the Athletics Center O'rena.
