STYGLES AND TUCKER NAMED 2022 CAPTAINS

ROCHESTER, Mich. - Michael Stygles and Seth Tucker have been named the 2022 baseball captains announced by Head Coach Jordon Banfield.

"This was an impossibly tough decision as I truly felt we had at least four guys that were completely deserving and would've been excellent choices for the role. That said, I'm completely confident that Seth Tucker and Michael Stygles are the right people to lead us into the 2022 season. Both have shown a willingness to take a stand for the program, even when it isn't the popular or easy position, and that's a trait I truly admire," Banfield said. "Stygles has been here for three seasons and really earned everyone's respect in all facets, and I'm not sure I've ever seen a player take a bigger step forward in one offseason than Seth Tucker. Both guys serve on our leadership council, are all about the program, and consistently hold themselves and everyone else accountable. I couldn't think of two guys I'd rather have on our side."

Stygles, a senior from Dewitt, Michigan, had an incredible junior season. He started in 36-of-38 games played at first base and designated hitter and led the team in average hits (55), RBI (38), home runs (4), doubles (12 – T-5th HL), total bases (79), and slugging percentage (.549) while ranking fifth in walks (17) and runs scored (23). His efforts earned him a Horizon League All-League second team selection. Stygles held a 3.68-grade point average last year and was named to the 2021 Horizon League Baseball All-Academic Team.

"With as many leaders as this team has, I'm humbled and honored to be selected as one of the captains for the 2022 season. This team is special, and hopefully, we can continue to improve the reputation of Oakland Baseball," Stygles said.

A 2021 newcomer from Hendrix College, Tucker immediately made his mark on the team. Starting in 26 games with 36 appearances in the outfield, he recorded four multi-hit games with two hits at Dayton, at NKU, and UIC. Tucker also hit .233 with 21 hits, 18 runs, eight RBI, five doubles, and a triple in 90 at-bats.

"It's a privilege to even be a part of this great group of guys and even more of a privilege to be their captain. Their willingness to put their heads down and get to work impresses me every day. It's a great honor and I'm excited about the 2022 season," Tucker said.

Oakland Baseball starts the season on Feb. 18 at CSU Bakersfield.
