This summer, multiple student-athletes will take on a new role that will further prepare them for future post-college athletics. Cammie Brummitt, a key leader of the Oakland Softball team, earned First Team All-Horizon League honors and NFCA All-Region status as a redshirt junior with the Golden Grizzlies. After the conclusion of her breakout campaign, she decided to take her leadership role to new heights as an intern with United Wholesale Mortgage. Brummitt has taken the mental and team skills provided by Oakland Softball with her to aid her new colleagues as a Summer Security Team member.

What are your roles and responsibilities within your internship, and how do you hope this experience will translate to your desired career in the future?

My role at UWM is interning with the Security team. My responsibilities change based on the day and what types of events are going on around the campus. However, I work in the command center alongside the security analysts and take calls regarding emergencies or security concerns that may happen. This internship could aid me in the future by providing me a meaningful experience within my desired field. I am also able to make connections with my fellow co-workers that have had prior experience in the fields that interest me. I hope that the skills I am learning can translate into a job in probation or some form of drug rehabilitation.

What are you hoping to gain from this internship experience?

I hope to gain experience within the criminal justice field and connect and network with the right people. I feel that connections can further my opportunities as a professional.

What have been some of the biggest challenges you have faced throughout your internship and how did you overcome them?

I would say that this internship experience has been relatively smooth sailing so far, but learning a whole new side of corporate security has been an adjustment. Thanks to my coworkers, who have much more experience than me, I have learned more about the day-to-day operations and adapt to this brand new environment.

Being an out-of-state student, would you consider picking up a job post-college in Michigan?

I would consider any job opportunity that comes my way, regardless of location. I would prefer to be in Michigan or Virginia (my home state) because those are the places that feel most like home to me.

How do you feel Oakland University has prepared you for your role at UWM?

I feel that my undergraduate degree and my experiences at OU have prepared me in many different ways. Oakland has put me in the position to form meaningful and lasting professional relationships. My experiences as a teammate and leader on the field have enabled me to adapt to any setting my work may need me in.
