ROCHESTER, Mich. — The Oakland men's basketball program announced its 2021-22 non-conference schedule on Tuesday, a slate that features four NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago and a multi-team exempt event (MTE).
"With the Horizon League going to 22 games, it has really changed my standpoint on how we should schedule," 38th-year head coach
Greg Kampe said. "I am happy with this schedule, but I think we need to figure out a way to get more home non-league games in the future while continuing the quality of opponents. It is something I have to work on, but it does not change how excited I am for this non-conference slate. I think we are going to be very battle-tested by the time we reach January."
OU will tip off the regular season on November 9 with a road matchup at West Virginia. The opener will mark the sixth-career matchup between Kampe and WVU head coach Bob Huggins. Combined, the two coaches have totaled 1,544 career wins. The pair faced off three times during Huggins' time at Cincinnati and twice since joining the Mountaineers in 2007. WVU escaped with a 76-71 victory over the Golden Grizzlies in the school's last meeting during the 2012-13 season.
Oakland will continue non-conference action at Oklahoma State on November 12. Last season, the Golden Grizzlies traveled to Stillwater, where they trailed by just one point at halftime but fell 84-71 at the final buzzer.
OU is set to host Toledo on November 17 for its lone home contest of non-conference play. Two days later, on November 19, the Golden Grizzlies will play at Alabama, a team that advanced to the Sweet 16 at the 2021 NCAA Tournament. Nate Oats, the head coach of the Crimson Tide, spent 11 years at nearby Romulus High School before accepting an assistant coaching role at Buffalo.
During Thanksgiving week, Oakland will head to Estero, Fla., to play in the Gulf Coast Showcase, November 22-24. The Golden Grizzlies open the eight-team showcase against Vermont at 1:30 p.m. ET on Monday, November 22.
OU's final road non-conference road game will take place at Bowling Green on December 7. Kampe, a 1978 graduate of BGSU who played basketball and football for the Falcons, holds a 5-4 record against his alma mater.
The Golden Grizzlies will wrap up their non-conference schedule at Little Caesars Arena on December 21 against a familiar opponent in Michigan State. The matchup will mark the 20th overall meeting and the 10th-straight season playing each other.
Oakland's game times and Horizon League schedule will release at a later date. For season ticket information, call (248) 370-4000 or visit the Athletics Ticket Office during normal working hours (Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.).
