MEN’S BASKETBALL WRAPS UP SUMMER TRAINING

ROCHESTER, Mich. — The Oakland men's basketball program wrapped up summer training after a productive eight weeks. With a roster of 13 — seven returners, six newcomers — the Golden Grizzlies had the opportunity for a whole summer slate for the first time since 2019.

Associate head coach Jeff Smith comments on the progression of Oakland's post players and the team...
What has been most enjoyable is how they have all embraced the learning process and trying to get better. It is a very young group across the board, even though Trey Townsend started every game last year. We have mixed in some guys that would typically be perimeter players but have shown the ability to go down and score with their back to the basket. It has been a little bit of a hybrid series as we have gone through it. The guys we have come in with energy, enthusiasm, and excitement. They are willing to be coached, which is awesome for the staff and has made it a great summer with this group. Overall, when you look at the past eight weeks, I could not be happier with our development as a team.

Assistant coach Tony Jones discusses the development of Oakland's guards…
We learned a lot over the summer. It was a very productive period. Obviously, we have one of the best point guards in the country (Jalen Moore) who led the nation in assists last year. It begins with him. We have tried to incorporate Micah Parrish in the backcourt a little bit, too. His three-point shooting from year one to year two has significantly improved. Along with Blake Lampman, both of those guys have put in a lot of work this summer. They are in before practice and after practice, which has paid off. The new guys, including Emmanuel Newsome, have the skillset and willingness to work and be coached. They just have to continue to understand the concept of what we are trying to do offensively and defensively. It is encouraging as it pertains to me as a coach. Zion Young and Mason Gibson are full of potential but were hampered with injuries over the last couple of weeks. They should be able to come back healthy this fall.
