OAKLAND TO THE NBA: KENDRICK NUNN

ROCHESTER, Mich. — With another NBA Draft in the books, it feels appropriate to remind everyone of Oakland's rich history of producing basketball players who have played at the highest level.

First up will be the Golden Grizzlies' most recent NBA standout, Kendrick Nunn.

Kendrick Nunn (1Nunn's lone season with the Golden Grizzlies in 2017-18 was memorable, to say the least. The Illinois transfer averaged 25.9 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game, which led to Horizon League Player of the Year and Lou Henson All-American honors. He led the nation in three-point field goals per game at 4.47, an Oakland single-season record. Additionally, he ranked top-10 nationally in points per game (2nd), total points (7th / 777), minutes per game (8th / 37:52), and total field goals made (11th / 262). The Chicago product poured in 30-plus points in an NCAA-leading 11 games, highlighted by a career-best 39 points versus Green Bay (2/22/18).

Nunn went undrafted in the 2018 NBA Draft but signed a contract with the Golden State Warriors shortly after. He spent the 2018-19 season in the NBA G League with the Santa Cruz Warriors, where the newcomer averaged 19.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.4 steals in a sixth-man role off the bench.

Following a strong debut year of professional basketball, Nunn signed with the Miami Heat. He totaled 112 points in his first five games, the most-ever by an undrafted player and the highest mark by a rookie since future Hall of Famer Kevin Durant. He reached 500 career points in a franchise-record 31 games, beating Dwyane Wade's previous record of 32 games. On the season, Nunn averaged 15.3 points, 3.3 assists, 2.7 rebounds, and .8 steals in 67 games, all starts. He played a significant factor in Miami's postseason run to the NBA Finals as well. At the 2019-20 season conclusion, Nunn tabbed runner-up for NBA Rookie of the Year, ahead of New Orleans Pelican star Zion Williamson, and only trailing Memphis Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant.

This past season, Nunn averaged 14.6 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.6 assists in 56 games. He managed to improve in several statistical categories, including field goal percentage (.485), three-point percentage (.381), rebounds per game (3.2), and steals per game (.9).

After consecutive seasons of outstanding play, the point guard will enter restricted free agency on August 2. Nunn's performance has set him into a position for a substantial pay increase, either with Miami or another bidding team.Kendrick Nunn 2019 Summer League Miami Heat
