OAKLAND CLOSES OUT HOME SCHEDULE WITH PAIR OF HORIZON LEAGUE DUAL MATCHES AGAINST MILWAUKEE

Golden Grizzlies and Panthers square off on Saturday, Apr. 17 and Sunday, Apr. 18 at 1 p.m. outdoors at the Oakland Tennis Courts

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Oakland women's tennis team closes out the home Horizon League schedule with a pair of dual matches against Milwaukee. The Golden Grizzlies and Panthers square off on Saturday, Apr. 17 and Sunday, Apr. 18 at 1 p.m. outdoors at the Oakland Tennis Courts.
 
Notes:
Last time out – Oakland battles at Northern Kentucky
The Golden Grizzlies dropped a pair of hard-fought road league dual matches, 5-2, at NKU.
 
Singles and Doubles:
- Mia Melnizki won both her matches at the No. 3 position against Northern Kentucky. She now ranks second on the team in singles wins at 4-12.
 
- Yasmin Glazbrook and Nirva Patel won 6-3 over Laura Sola Grau/Maria Koo at the No. 1 double position while Joëlle Tabernal and Emma Hultqvist won a 7-6 tie-breaker over Elizabeth Rozin/Hannah Watton at the No. 2 sport to claim the double point at NKU.
 
- Glazbrook leads the team with a 5-11 singles record between the No. 1 and No. 2 positions while Emma Hultqvist in 3-13 at the No. 4 and No. 5.
 
- Glazbrook and Nirva Patel lead the way in doubles at the No. 1 position with a 4-4 mark with wins coming at Ball State, twice against EMU and against IUPUI.
 
- Patel and Melnizki won their first two matches of the season at the No. 2 singles and No. 3 singles position respectively against IUPUI.
 
- Joëlle Tabernal won her first singles match of the season defeating Isabella Schoolcraft in the sets 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 (14-12) at No. 4 singles at Valparaiso (3/13).
 
- Due to a shortened roster consisting of only five student-athletes this season, Oakland has to start each competition with a forfeit at the No. 3 doubles position and an additional forfeit at the No. 6 singles position.
 
Nirva Patel named Nike® Horizon League Women's Singles Player of the Week (3/24):
Patel, a Somerset, UK native, went a perfect 2-0 at the No. 2 singles position helping Oakland win their first two matches of the season over IUPUI to go 2-0 in Horizon League play. She defeated Gabrielle Ochalik in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, in Oakland's 5-2 win and followed that up with a hard-fought three-set win over Christina Stankovic (5-7, 6-1, 7-5) helping the Golden Grizzlies to a 4-3 win to complete the weekend sweep.
 
Oakland posted weekend sweep over IUPUI to win first two matches of the season:
Match 1: The Golden Grizzlies won their first match of the season with a 5-2 win over IUPUI to open Horizon League play (3/20). After winning the doubles point, Yasmin Glazbrook, Nirva Patel, Mia Melnizki and Emma Hultqvist each won at the No. 1, 2, 3 and 5 singles positions respectively.
 
Despite defaulting at the No. 3 doubles position, Patel and Galzbrook defeated Krystal Grubb and Gabrielle Ochalik, 6-3, at the No. 1 spot followed by Joëlle Tabernal and Hultqvist who took out Sarah Lounsbury and Christina Lounsbury at the No. 2 position to claim the doubles point.
 
In singles play, Oakland won 4-of-6 matches as Glazbrook won by injury default over Grubb at No. 1 while Patel defeated Ochalik in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 2 position. Melnizki outlasted Lounsbury in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5, at No. 3 followed by Hultqvist who also won in straight sets over Hayward, 6-2, 6-4.
 
Match - 2: With the match tied at 3-3, Mia Melnizki grinded out a three-set win over Sarah Lounsbury, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 3 singles position to give Oakland a thrilling 4-3 won over IUPUI on Sunday to remain unbeaten in Horizon League play. Nirva Patel set the stage with a hard-fought three-set win over Christina Stankovic, 5-7, 6-1, 7-5 at the No. 2 spot to draw the match even at 3-3.
 
Oakland entered singles play down 2-0 after dropping the doubles point and forfeiting at the No. 6 singles spot. Yasmin Glazbrook cruised to a 6-1, 6-1, straight-set win over Gabrielle Ochalik at No. 1 followed by Emma Hultqvist who downed Samantha Hayward in straight sets, 7-5, 6-0 at the No. 4 spot to tie the match at 2-2.
