ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Oakland women's tennis team beings Horizon League play with a pair of home dual matches against IUPUI. The Golden Grizzlies and Jaguars square off on Saturday, Mar. 20 and Sunday, Mar. 21 at 4:30 p.m. at the Bloomfield Tennis and Fitness Center.

Joëlle Tabernal defeated Isabella Schoolcraft in the sets 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 (14-12) at No. 4 singles as Oakland completed non-conference play with a hard-fought 6-1 set back at Valparaiso.

- After dropping the doubles point,
Yasmin Glazbrook battled Claire Czerwonka before falling in three sets 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8) at the No. 1 singles position while
Mia Melnizki also battled before falling in three sets to Mia Bertino, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-5) at the No. 3 spot.

Yasmin Glazbrook won a match at the No. 1 singles position against Eastern Michigan grinding out a 2-6, 7-5, 10-6 three-set win over Isabelle Popma and also teamed with
Nirva Patel for a 7-6 (7-3) win over Popma and Julia Piatek at the No. 1 doubles spot. However, it was not enough as the Golden Grizzlies fell, 6-1, to the Eagles at the Bloomfield Tennis and Fitness Center (3/6).

- Oakland defeated Toledo 6-1 last season and is a perfect 7-0 over the last seven matches against Valpo securing a 4-3 win the last time the two schools met in 2017.

- Glazbrook leads the team with a 2-4 singles record between the No. 1 and No. 2 positions while
Emma Hultqvist has a win at the No. 5 spot against EMU.

- Glazbrook and Patel lead the way in doubles at the No. 1 position with a 3-2 mark with wins coming at Ball State and twice against EMU.

- Oakland traveled to EMU and dropped a pair of dual matches by the score of 6-1, 6-1 at the Chippewa Club (2/26). Glazbrook defeated Vasavi Ganesan in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, at the No. 2 singles position and also notched a 6-4 win with
Nirva Patel at the No. 1 doubles spot over Isabelle Popma and Julia Piatek. Hultqvist also secured a three set 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 win over Grace Whitney at the No. 5 singles spot.

- Oakland finished the COVID-19 shorten 2020 season 6-4 overall and suffered a 7-0 setback at Ball State last season.

- Last season, the Golden Grizzlies went 3-2 against schools from the Mid-American Conference (MAC) after dropping a hard fought 4-3 decision to Western Michigan (1/18) followed by a 5-2 road win over Akron (1/26) and 6-1 home victory against Toledo (2/9). Oakland also dropped a 7-0 decision at Ball State (2/16) and secured a 4-3 win at Eastern Michigan (3/6).

- The Golden Grizzlies enter the season with only five active players on the roster. Sophomore
Nirva Patel returns after posting a 4-6 overall in singles play at the No. 2 position last season with wins against Bethune-Cookman, Findlay, Toledo and Akron. She also posted 5-4 overall doubles mark going 5-3 with
Aarja Chakraborty at the No. 2 (2-2) and No. 3 (3-1) spots.

- Due to the shortened roster, Oakland has to start each competition with a forfeit at the No. 3 doubles position and an additional forfeit at the No. 6 singles position.

Emma Hultqvist also returns after going a perfect 3-0 in singles play going 2-0 at No. 4 and 1-0 at No. 6 positions with singles wins against Bethune-Cookman, FAU and Findlay.

- Oakland welcomes a pair of transfer student-athletes from Green Bay in
Mia Melnizki and
Yasmin Glazbrook. Melnizki posted a 4-6 record at No. 2 doubles and 5-7 mark between No. 3 (2-4) and No. 4 (3-3) singles helping the Phoenix to a 6-6 overall mark in the shortened 2020 season. Glazbrook posted a 4-6 record at No. 1 doubles and 5-7 mark between No. 1 (1-2) and No. 2 (4-5) singles for the Phoenix last season. Â As a freshman, she recorded three wins at No. 1 singles (3-10) and went 1-1 at the No. 2 position and 3-2 at the No. 1 doubles position, 1-1 at No. 2 and 1-5 at No. 3 with a 5-8 overall mark.

- The lone freshman on the team is Joëlle Tabernal from Hilversum, North Holland. She won the Province Tournament earning No. 1 ranking in Utrecht, Holland and reached a No. 80 national ranking. She also helped Holland team win club division competition three times and also won multiple individual UTR tournaments.
