CLEVELAND — The Oakland University women's volleyball program dropped a three-set decision (16-25, 18-25, 17-25) to the Cleveland State Vikings Monday evening inside the Woodling Gymnasium. The Golden Grizzlies fell to 2-3 in Horizon League play with the loss, while the Vikings improved to 4-3 overall.
As a team, Oakland was limited to a season-low in hitting percentage (.082) and kills (28). Senior middle hitter
Jamie Walling led the Grizzly Grizzly attack with a team-high 12 kills at a .281 clip and added six digs.
Brittany Welch notched seven kills and one block, while
Patti Cesarini tallied five kills in 22 attempts.
AnnaBelle Tomei (15 digs) and
Madison Ross (10 digs) each had double-figure digs to pace the OU setters.
Defensively,
Lindsay Wightman extended her streak of 10 or more digs to 18 matches, as she came away with a team-best 16 in the match. The pair of
Jessica Riedl and Ross contributed with two block assists.
CSU jumped out to a 13-6 lead in the opening set, which was too much to overcome for the Golden Grizzlies. The Vikings continually increased their advantage with a .290 hitting clip to take the first set, 25-16.
OU got in front, 3-1, in the second set following consecutive attack errors by Cleveland State. However, Oakland found themselves down 10-5 after a 9-2 run by CSU. Oakland inched within two, 13-11, following a service error, but the hot-hitting Vikings took control with six of the next seven points and prevailed to win the second set, 25-18.
Oakland fell behind early in the third set, as CSU built a 5-0 lead. The Golden Grizzlies rallied back to gain a 12-11 lead after four-consecutive points, including two-straight by Welch on a kill and block and a service ace by
Kennedy Dolmage. The Vikings quickly answered back with an 8-2 run to build a lead that proved insurmountable, resulting in a match-deciding 25-17 set victory.
The Golden Grizzlies are back in action tomorrow against CSU for the second match of the season series. First serve is set for 5 p.m
