GAME 16 & 17: Four-game homestand begins with Penguins

ROCHESTER, Mich. — The Oakland men's basketball team starts a four-game homestand against Youngstown State on Jan. 15-16 at 7 p.m. (Friday) and 3 p.m. (Saturday) at the Athletics Center O'rena. Fans can watch the action on ESPN3 on Friday, and TV20 and ESPN3 on Saturday. Neal Ruhl (play-by-play) and Dan Waterstradt (analyst) will call both games.

The Golden Grizzlies split their series to the Penguins last season. Oakland lost 61-60 to YSU on the road in early January 2020 but bounced back with a 72-64 victory inside the O'rena. Current guards Rashad Williams (17 points) and Kevin Kangu (14 points) scored in double-figures in the home win.

Oakland leads 17-9 in the overall series. Coach Greg Kampe and company have excelled at home with a record of 11-2, which includes a win in four of its last five matchups versus YSU inside the O'rena.

The Penguins were projected to finish second and received three first-place votes in the Horizon League Preseason Poll. Senior forward Naz Bohannon has paced YSU by averaging 17.9 points per game on 55-percent shooting and 8.2 rebounds per game. Two-time All-HL selection Darius Quisenberry has added 13.7 points per game and a team-leading 3.3 assists per game.

Oakland started its season 0-9 overall. The Golden Grizzlies non-conference schedule featured four-straight Power-5 schools in Michigan (11/29), Purdue (12/1), Oklahoma State (12/5), and Michigan State (12/13) and five schools top-50 in the current NCAA NET rankings. Seven of Oakland's 15 games have been against teams top-100 in the NET rankings.

Thirteen out of Oakland's 15 games have been on the road. The Golden Grizzlies were 11 games into the 2020-21 season before their first home contest, which came against Wright State (1/1/21). Oakland was scheduled to host Northern Kentucky on Dec. 26-27, but the series canceled due to a positive COVID-19 test and subsequent quarantining within the NKU program.

Both teams are tied for seventh in the HL standings with a conference record of 3-5. Oakland dropped two tightly-contested games at Green Bay last weekend while YSU split its road series to Wright State last time out.

Cleveland State is the lone school undefeated in conference play at 8-0. Oakland is one of six schools in the League to play eight conference games to date. The remaining six schools have logged between three-to-six games due to cancellation or postponement.
