ROCHESTER, Michigan - The Oakland University softball team travels to Louisville, Kentucky, to participate in the Red & Black Challenge at Ulmer Stadium from Friday, March 6, through Sunday, March 8. The Golden Grizzlies open play with Northwestern.
Oakland will play five games over the three-day tournament on the campus of the University of Louisville. The Golden Grizzlies square off with a pair of Big Ten foes in Northwestern and Illinois, along with taking on Evansville out of the Missouri Valley Conference.
Northwestern has played nine games against the nations' top 25 - highlighted by a 6-2 victory over No. 5 Florida State and one-run decisions against No. 7 Florida and No. 2 Washington. Evansville comes into the week on a two-game skid. The Purple Aces have one power-five matchup to date, falling to Maryland 1-0. Despite a losing record, Illinois is 2-0 versus top-25 teams - defeating No. 21 Ole Miss and No. 23 Auburn.
The Golden Grizzlies went 1-3 last weekend at the Spartan Classic in Greensboro, North Carolina. Freshman Sydney Campbell went the whole weekend without giving up an earned run. Campbell has an ERA of 1.02 through nine appearances and has thrown a complete game in six of seven starts this season.
Redshirt sophomore Cammie Brummitt leads a trio of Golden Grizzlies with double-digit hits on the season with 15. Brummitt is hitting .326 on the young year with three doubles and 10 RBI.
Redshirt sophomore Madison Jones is the lone Oakland batter to have a single, double, triple and home run to her name through 13 games. Jones leads the team with seven extra base hits. Jones and freshman Jen Krizka have both recorded multi-home run games this season.
