ROCHESTER, Michigan - Oakland University Softball opens the 2020 campaign at the Upstate Classic Tournament from Friday, February 14, through Sunday, February 16. The Golden Grizzlies will play four games in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Tournament play opens for Oakland with Buffalo on Friday night at 5 pm. The Golden Grizzlies come back on day two for a pair of contests, first taking on host South Carolina - Upstate followed by Massachusetts. The weekend concludes on Sunday with Maryland Eastern Shore.
Oakland was recently tabbed No. 5 in the Horizon League Preseason Poll. The Golden Grizzlies finished the 2019 season with a mark of 9-14 in conference play. Oakland notched nine nonconference victories a year ago.
Redshirt sophomore Maddie Jones returns to the field after missing 2019. In 2018, Jones led the Golden Grizzlies with a .387 average at the plate - recording a team-high 26 extra base hits. She was named the Horizon League Freshman of the Year and a first-team All-Conference selection.
In the circle, junior Lauren Debono returns after going 7-6 a season a go with an ERA of 3.74. Debono led the Golden Grizzlies in wins, along with appearing in the circle 34 times. She notched 113 strikeouts in her sophomore campaign.
