KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Oakland tennis team battled but fell short Saturday, falling to Western Michigan, 4-3 from the West Hills Athletic Club. 
 
Western Michigan started out the day taking the doubles point from Oakland to take an early 1-0 lead.
 
In singles play, Ava Thielman earned her first win of the year in the no. 1 spot, defeating WMU's Femke Tjon-a-Joe, 6-2, 1-6, 6-2.
 
Darya Maltseva and Aarja Chakraborty also earned wins in singles play for the Golden Grizzlies. Maltseva competed at the no. 3 spot taking down Kristina Tiraspolsky, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5. In her Oakland debut, Chakraborty defeated Jeryn Jack 7-6, 7-6 at no. 5 singles.
 
Saturday marked the first outing for the Golden Grizzlies of the 2020 season and they will continue play Sunday, Jan. 26 at Akron beginning at 9 a.m.
