CLEVELAND, Ohio - Oakland University men's basketball concludes a two-game road trip to Ohio with Cleveland State on Saturday, January 11. Tipoff from the Wolstein Center is set for 3 pm on ESPN3/+.

The Golden Grizzlies are coming off a 61-60 loss to Youngstown State on Thursday night. Behind 59-58 with seven seconds to play, sophomore Daniel Oladapo found senior Xavier Hill-Mais in the paint for the go-ahead bucket. YSU followed with an answer of its own, inbounding to Darius Quisenberry, who then took it the length of the floor for the game-winner.

Oakland has been in five games decided by one possession this season - the Golden Grizzlies are 0-5 in those contests.

Hill-Mais leads the team with 15.8 points per game this season and 7.4 rebounds. He enters Saturday's matchup third in the conference in scoring and rebounding.

Since the start of league play, sophomore Tray Maddox Jr. has averaged 14.0 points per game - ranking 13th in the Horizon League in the category in conference contests. Maddox Jr. has knocked down at least one triple in 10-straight games, scoring in double-figures in four consecutive.

The Vikings are coming off a home victory over Detroit Mercy, 64-59. Junior Craig Beaudion scored a career-high 17 points and Algevon Eichelberger added 16 points as Cleveland State extended its winning streak to three straight.

Cleveland State improved to 7-10 overall and 3-1 in the Horizon League, which marked the first time CSU has won three of its first four league games since the 2014-15 season.

The Vikings have won three straight games for the second time this season. Cleveland State has just 18 combined turnovers in the last two games.

The overall series between Oakland and the Vikings is tied at 8-8, but the Golden Grizzlies have claimed the last two meetings. Oakland hasn't lost in Cleveland since January 8, 2015 - 65-61.

Notes
  • Oakland has been lending a helping hand as of late, recording two 20-plus assist efforts over the past four games. Since the start of Horizon League play, the Golden Grizzlies have been averaging a conference-best 18.5 assists per game - Michigan State currently leads all teams throughout the 2019-20 season with 19.8 assists per contest. Against Wright State, the Golden Grizzlies assisted on 21 of 26 made field goals (81-percent) and 22 of 29 (76-percent) made field goals against Detroit Mercy to open league play on Dec. 28. Junior Kevin Kangu leads Oakland with 65 assists this season - good for fourth in the Horizon League.
  • Oakland's defense sits second in the league at 67.2 points surrendered per game. The Golden Grizzlies held opponents to under 60 points four times this season. Opponents have hit just 40.7 percent of their field goals against Oakland, making the Golden Grizzlies' defense tops in the Horizon League in the category.
  • Freshman Madison Monroe made his third start of the season last timeout, notching the second double-figure game of his career. Monroe is averaging 9.3 ppg over the last three outings.
  • Sophomore Tray Maddox Jr. has knocked down at least one triple in 10-straight efforts. Maddox Jr. is averaging 14,0 ppg since the start of conference play.
  • Coach Greg Kampe has been going deep on his bench this season, most recently playing 11 Golden Grizzlies against Youngstown State. Kampe went 13-deep on the roster for the first time this season against Wright State and has gone 12 deep on six occasions this season and at least 10 in 14 games this season.
  • The Golden Grizzlies come into this week the fourth-highest ranked Horizon team in the most updated NET rankings. The NET relies on game results, strength of schedule, game location, scoring margin, net offensive and defensive efficiency, and the quality of wins and losses. Wright State (112), Northern Kentucky (165) and Green Bay (220) are the league foes in front of Oakland (229). Youngstown State is 230 as of January 6.
  • With the one-point loss at Youngstown State on Thursday, Oakland falls to 1-3 in league play. The last time Oakland started 1-3 in the Horizon League was 2017-18. The Golden Grizzlies went on to win five straight after dropping three of the year's first four in conference action and finished the season 10-8 and earned the No. 4 seed in the Horizon League Tournament. Oakland has never started conference play 1-4.
  • Oakland added 10 newcomers to the 2019-20 squad, including three transfers in Kevin Kangu (Vincennes University), Daniel Oladapo (Chipola College) and Rashad Williams (Cleveland State).
  • Despite struggling from beyond the arc this season, the Golden Grizzlies opened the YSU game with three triples before the first media timeout. The last time Oakland did not convert a shot from behind the arc was on Jan. 30, 1988 vs. Wayne State University. The Golden Grizzlies have hit a three-ball in 987-consecutive games, which is the seventh-longest streak in the NCAA.
  • Oakland started the game by holding Youngstown State scoreless for 8:11 of game play - giving the Golden Grizzly offense the chance to build a 13-0 lead.
