TRACK AND FIELD HIT THE ROAD TO YOUNGSTOWN FOR 2019 OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

The men look to repeat as championships while the women look for their first title

2019 Outdoor Championships Preview

ROCHESTER, Mich. –
The Oakland Track and Field teams will travel to Youngstown, Ohio to compete in the 2019 Horizon League Outdoor Championships, hosted by Youngstown State University, May 3-5. Competition on Friday is scheduled to begin at 12 pm.

Last year at the Outdoor Championships, the men's team claimed their first title in program history, recording 233 points, three points more than the defending champions, Youngstown State. The women finished third with 131 points.

The men claimed their victory last year in style as they had to go 1-2-3 in the men's 5000m to give the men's 4x400 relay a shot to take it all. Former Oakland standouts Andrew Bowman, Jacob Bowman and Bryce Stroede did just that taking first through third place, giving the 4x400 team of Trè Brown, Jimmie Williams, Zach Joyce and Corey Goodloe the chance to win it all. The team went on to take first in 3:16.17 to erase a one-point deficit and earn the title.

In addition, Chanel Gardner took first in the 400m dash with a time of 56.26 and Maggie Schneider earned Co-Women's Championship Outstanding Performer-Running for placing first in the 5000m (17:08.36) as well as the 10000m (35:50.96).

Brandon Davis set a new school record in the triple jump at the championships last year with a leap of 48 ft., 7.5 in, good for runner-up in the event. Tyler Sirut placed fourth in the hammer throw by a mark of 175 ft., 10 in.

In the current league conference rankings, Jimmie Williams holds the top spot in the conference in the 200m as well as the 400m. Brandon Davis holds the top mark in the long jump, Chanel Gardner holds the 400m, Rachel Levy the 5000m, Maggie Schneider the 10000m, and Olivia Rademacher is sitting at the top of the heptathlon standings.

Last weekend at the Ohio State Jesse Owens, Jimmie Williams placed third in the 400m with a time of 47.34 and Marcus Nellum ran the 400m hurdles in a time of 53.84. In addition, Hannah Coverdill placed eighth in the women's 400m hurdles with a time of 1:04.25.
