VALPARAISO, Ind. - Danielle Szajna went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run while Haley Zemmer pitched a solid game allowing only one earned run in 10.2 innings of work with three strikeouts as Oakland (11-26, 6-9) dropped the series opener at Valparaiso, 3-2, in 11 innings.
Oakland had runners in scoring position in the seventh and ninth inning along with the bases loaded with no outs in the 11th but could not get the go ahead run off Valpo pitcher Taylor Weissenhofer who went the distance with 14 strikeouts. The Golden Grizzlies left 11 runners on base for the game.
Valpo had two outs with a runner on second in the bottom of the seventh when Abbey Walewski robbed Kaitlyn Ranieri of a game-winning hit making a diving catch in center field forcing the game into extra innings. However, Ranieri would not be denied as she delivered a walk-off single to score a runner from third in the bottom of the 11th.
