OAKLAND WINS HORIZON LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP

ROCHESTER, Mich. -- All-Tournament team selection and MVP Sara Cupp blasted a three-run home run in the sixth inning propelling No.1 Oakland (27-22) to a 7-3 win over No. 3 Wright State (23-33) giving the Golden Grizzlies their first Horizon League Championship in program history and third automatic NCAA bid since 2003. Erin Kownacki earned the tournament pitching award after going a perfect 3-0, Courtnee Johnson was named defensive MVP while Jackie Kisman and Sarah Hartley also were all-tournament team selections.

On the day, Cupp hit 2-for-3 with three RBIs with two runs scored and posted a staggering .750 batting average with six hits and five RBIs overall to lead all players offensively for the tournament. Kownacki went the distance winning her third consecutive game and finished the tournament with a 1.71 ERA and 10 strikeouts. Johnson was 2-for-4 with a RBI and made a clutch diving catch in the sixth inning to prevent WSU from tying the game.

Hartley and Morgan Muron scored two runs each while going 2-for-3 and 2-for-4 respectively. Kisman also went 2-for-4 while Laura Pond, Lyndsay Hill and Marina Salinas combined for three hits and two RBIs to deliver solid production from the bottom of the lineup.

Wright State took an early 1-0 lead in the first off a RBI triple from Hanna Floyd.

WSU added another run in the top of the third to move ahead 2-0. However, Oakland responded in the bottom half as Muron scored from third off a wild pitch followed by a RBI double from Johnson to score Hartley trying the game at 2-2.

The bottom of the lineup delivered in the fourth as Pond drew a walk followed by a double from Hill. Salinas then dropped in a bloop single to score pinch runner Rae Beadlescomb giving Oakland a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Pond delivered a single to score Cupp increasing the lead to 4-2.

WSU cut the lead to 4-3 off a RBI single in the sixth. With a runner on third and two outs, Libby Pfeffer hit a shot down the left field line where Johnson made a diving catch to save a run and get Oakland out of the inning with a one run lead.

In the sixth inning, Cupp's three-run shot broke open the game giving the Golden Grizzlies a 7-3 lead en route to the championship.
