ROCHESTER, Mich. - In a battle between All-Horizon League First-Team pitchers, Erin Kownacki out dueled Pitcher of the Year Elaine Heflin tossing a one-hitter en route to her fifth complete game shutout and 15th win of the season to send No.1 Oakland (26-22) to the championship game with a 1-0 win over No. 2 UIC (24-20) in semifinal action on Friday afternoon at the Oakland Softball Field. Sara Cupp also hit a perfect 3-for-3 totaling half of Oakland's six hits.
Jackie Kisman and Courtnee Johnson each hit 1-for-3 while Lyndsay Hill went 1-for-2.
Oakland took at 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Cupp hit a single to right field scoring Sarah Hartley from first base aided by a throwing error from the UIC right fielder.
UIC threatened in the bottom of the seventh with runners on second and third with two outs. Kownacki struck out Paige Peterson to end the game sending Oakland to their first championship game since 2003.
Oakland win play the winner of No. 2 UIC and No. 3 Wright State on Saturday, May 9 at 12:00 p.m. at the Oakland Softball Field.
