NILES, Ohio - Tyler Pagano went 3-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs, while Zach Sterry collected two hits and scored twice as the Oakland baseball team (10-31, 5-17) dropped the series finale to Youngstown State (15-27, 8-16), 9-3, on Sunday from Eastwood Field.
"We didn't play as well as I hoped we would have with an opportunity to take the series," said coach John Musachio.
Youngstown State scored the first run in the opening frame, but Oakland would tie the game in the top of the second on a RBI-double by Pagano. YSU retook the lead in the bottom half as Frank Califano drove in a run with a ground ball to second base.
The Penguins pushed its lead to 5-1 after six innings led by a Califano RBI-single in the fourth and an Alex Larivee solo home run to left field in the fifth inning. Oakland cut the lead to 5-2 in the seventh inning as Pagano drove in his second run with a single to left field, but YSU would respond with a four-run bottom half of the inning.
Oakland scored the final run of the game in the ninth on a Brett Impemba single to center field to bring home Pagano.
Nate Green suffered the loss allowing five runs, four earned, in 5.2 innings of work. YSU's D.J. Carr earned the win tossing 6.2 innings allowing two runs on six hits with two strikeouts.
The Golden Grizzlies return to the diamond next week for a pair of midweek games starting on Tuesday at home against Eastern Michigan at 3 p.m. before traveling to Western Michigan on Wednesday.
