MILWAUKEE - Trent Drumheller and Tyler Janish each went 1-for-2 with a walk as the Oakland baseball team (10-36, 5-22) dropped the series opener at Milwaukee (33-18, 14-13), 5-0, on Thursday from Henry Aaron Field.
"Great pitching performance by Joe Pavlovich from UWM," said coach John Musachio. "We had a couple of chances and just didn't get the two-out hit we needed. All three of our relief pitchers walked the first batter they faced and two of them scored. Bullpen guys have a tough job but they have to be ready to throw strikes immediately."
Milwaukee used three pitchers to shutout Oakland for just the second time this season. UWM starter Joe Pavlovich tossed 7.0 innings allowing four hits with four strikeouts. Chris Van Dyke suffered the loss allowing one run on two hits in 3.0 innings.
The Panthers scored in the first inning as Mitch Ghelfi hit a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Luke Meeteer. UWM added to its lead in the fourth inning on back-to-back solo home runs off the bats of Daulton Varsho and Nick Unes. Milwaukee scored its final run in the sixth inning on a Ryan McShane RBI-double.
Oakland had a scoring chance in the third inning as Janish and Drumheller led off the inning with singles, but Pavlovich would settle down and get the next three batters out, including Ian Yetsko who hit a line drive to right-center field but was run down by the right fielder for the final out.
The Golden Grizzlies continue their three-game Horizon League series on Friday as they face Milwaukee starting at 7 p.m. ET. The game will take place at Miller Park, home of the Milwaukee Brewers.
