NILES, Ohio - Jason Hager threw 8.0 innings allowing three runs with two strikeouts, while Trent Drumheller went 3-for-4 with a RBI and also scored a run as the Oakland baseball team (9-30, 4-17) dropped an 11-inning affair at Youngstown State (14-26, 7-15), 6-5, on Friday from Eastwood Field.
"Tough one today," said coach John Musachio. "Both teams had opportunities to put the other team away and both teams made some mistakes. That's baseball. We will come back out tomorrow with the same spirit and enthusiasm we have had over the past couple of weeks."
In the 11th inning, Youngstown State would win the game as Alex Larivee led off the inning with a single to centerfield and would score on a walk-off single through the left side off the bat of Jason Shirley.
Oakland took a 5-3 lead in the top of the 10th inning as Drumheller scored on a YSU error followed later by a single by Tyler Pagano to plate Robby Enslen. However, the Penguins would send the game to the 11th as Alex Core and Frank Califano each drove in runs.
The Golden Grizzlies trailed 2-0 going into the seventh inning before tying the game as Ian Yetsko scored on an error in front of Drumheller hitting a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Pagano. Oakland grabbed a 3-2 lead in the eighth on another sacrifice fly, this time off the bat of Enslen, to plate Mike Brosseau.
The Penguins pushed the game to extra innings as Shane Willoughby came up with the bases loaded and hit a ground ball to second base to bring home the tying run.
Nate Schweers suffered the loss for Oakland allowing one run on two hits in 0.2 innings in relief. Youngstown State's Anthony Konders earned the winning tossing the final 1.1 innings without allowing a run. YSU starter Joe King threw 6.0 innings giving up one run on just four hits.
Oakland and Youngstown State will play game two of this three-game Horizon League series on Saturday starting at 2 p.m. from Eastwood Field.
