MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Robby Enslen collected three hits and drove in a pair of runs as the Oakland baseball team (5-19) fell 12-4 at Central Michigan (21-12) on Wednesday from Theunissen Stadium.
"Tough to beat anyone when our pitchers walk as many as they did today," said head coach John Musachio. "Our bullpen needs to do a much better job of being able to get ahead of hitters. We need to focus on throwing strikes early in the count heading into this weekend's conference series."
The Golden Grizzlies led 3-2 in the fifth before Central Michigan put up seven runs in the bottom half of the inning. The Chippewas capitalized on four hits, four walks and two hit-by-pitches to take a 9-3 advantage. CMU added two more runs in the sixth inning as Morgan Oliver doubled home a run and Daniel Jipping scored on a wild pitch.
Oakland trailed 2-0 heading in to the fifth inning after the Chips scored a pair of runs in the first inning but took the lead with three runs. Jake Morton drew a bases-loaded walk for the first run followed by a two-RBI single by Enslen to plate Mike Brosseau and Spencer Marentette.
Connor Fannon suffered the loss allowing six runs, five earned, in 1.2 innings out of the bullpen on four hits. CMU's Sean Martens earned the win tossing 1.2 shutout innings in relief and tallied three strikeouts.
The Oakland baseball team returns to the field this weekend for a three-game Horizon League series at Valparaiso starting on Friday beginning at 4 p.m. ET.
