OAKLAND SWEEPS DOUBLEHEADER AT CSU, 3-2 AND 8-3

April 25, 2015

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

CLEVELAND - The dynamic pitching duo of Erin Kownacki and Haley Zemmer each picked up wins to lead Oakland (22-19, 13-4 HL) to a 3-2 and 8-3 doubleheader sweep over Cleveland State (21-22, 6-9 HL) on Saturday at Viking Field. Both held the Horizon League's top hitting team offense in check as Kownacki (12-10) went 9.0 innings with a season-high eight strikeouts while Zemmer (5-4) went the distance tossing 7.0 innings with five strikeouts allowing no earned runs on five scattered hits.

Offensively, Sarah Hartley hit a combined 3-for-8 with a double and three RBIs. Morgan Muron also went 3-for-8 with a double, two runs and RBI while Courtnee Johnson hit 2-for-8 with a double and team-high three runs scored. Sara Cupp added a home run, run scored and two RBIs along with Lauren Mead who had a pair of singles and two RBIs.

After being down 1-0 in the first game, Mead hit a single to left center scoring pinch runner Rae Beadlescomb to tie the game at 1-1 in the fourth inning.

Cupp launched a missile over the center field wall giving Oakland a lead 2-1 in the top of the sixth. The lead would not last long as CSU's Cynthia Woodard hit her 22nd home run of the season to tie the game at 2-2.

In the top of the ninth, Johnson hit a double and was brought home as Julia Morales hit the ball between CSU second baseman Susan Knight's legs giving Oakland a 3-2 advantage. Kownacki closed the door on the Vikings retiring the last three batters in order to secure the win.

In the nightcap, the Golden Grizzlies wasted little time getting on the board in the first inning as Hartley hit a double to score Johnson for a 1-0 advantage.

Hartley delivered again in the third with a bloop single to plate Muron moving Oakland up 2-0.

Mead reached a fielder's choice that scored Johnson increasing the lead to 3-0 in the fourth. The Golden Grizzlies then went up 4-0 in the fifth off a RBI single from Morales.

Hartley and Cupp added RBI singles to move Oakland ahead 6-0 in the sixth. However, a bases loaded double by Alyson Broschk cut the lead in half at 6-3 in the bottom of the frame.

The Golden Grizzlies responded with two outs in the top of the seventh as Kisman reached on a fielding error which allowed a run to score followed by Muron's RBI single which increased the lead to 8-3. Zemmer then retired the side to lock up the win.

Oakland returns home for a mid-week doubleheader against in-state foe Eastern Michigan on Wednesday, April 29 beginning at 2 p.m. followed by the second game at 4 p.m.
