LATE INNING RALLY PROPELS OAKLAND TO DOUBLEHEADER SPLIT AT YSU

April 1, 2015

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Sara Cupp went a combined 5-for-6 with three RBI, two doubles and a run while Julia Morales and TJ Bindus each hit home runs as Oakland (12-15, 3-2 HL) pounded a season-high 19 hits and rallied with four runs in the 10th inning to win the doubleheader nightcap,11-7, over YSU (11-15, 4-1, HL) in Horizon League action on Wednesday at the YSU Softball Complex. The Penguins took the first game 2-1 with a walk-off hit in the bottom of the seventh.

Jackie Kisman and Courtnee Johnson each hit a combined 4-of-9 with four RBI while Bindus totaled 3-for-8 with two RBI and two runs. Sarah Hartley also went 3-for-8 with four runs scored.

On the mound, Kaley Waalkes (2-2) recorded her second win of the season in relief going 6.0 innings with two strikeouts. Erin Kownacki was solid going 6.2 innings allowing only one earned run but came up on the short end of the game one pitcher's duel with YSU's Caitlyn Minney.

"I am so proud of this team to come back and win that second game in extra innings after a heart breaking loss in the first game," said head coach Connie Miner. "Erin threw well enough for us to win allowing nothing really hit hard only a lot of bloop hits. We hit the ball hard with people in scoring position a few times but right at people. In the second game, Laura and Kaley did a nice job of battling on the mound for us. We really hit the ball well with 19 hits. Everyone hit with Sara, TJ, Courtnee and Jackie all having three hits and many others with two. Sara Cupp really stepped up all day long. Morgan also played outstanding defense at third base. It was a total team effort, the energy was outstanding and I can't wait to see them compete this weekend."

In second game, Oakland took a 2-0 lead off RBI singles from Hartley and Johnson in the third inning. YSU scored four runs on two hits to move ahead 4-2 in the bottom half.

Morales' home run in the fourth pulled the Golden Grizzlies within a run at 4-3. Johnson added another RBI single in the fifth to tie the game before YSU got a RBI hit to take a 5-4 lead.

Oakland once again tied the game in the sixth off a RBI double from Cupp only to see YSU regain the lead at 6-5 off a sacrifice fly.

The Golden Grizzlies got its first lead of the game at 7-6 as Kisman delivered a two-run single in the top of the seventh. This time, YSU tied the game up in the bottom half with a home run from Sarah Dowd.

The game would remain tied until the 10th when Cupp delivered a two-run double followed by a two-run shot from Bindus putting Oakland up for good at 11-7.

In the first game, runs were hard to come by as Kownacki and Minney battled pitch for pitch on the mound. Hartley managed to score in the first inning off a fielding error.

However, the Penguins tied the game at 1-1 with an unearned run of their own off a wild pitch in the second inning.

The game would remain tied until the bottom of the seventh when Kayla Haslett delivered a two-out single to win the game.

Due to weather and unplayable field conditions, the home opening series against Valparaiso originally scheduled for this weekend at the Oakland Softball Field will now be played at the Valpo Softball Field. The first game is set for Friday, April 3 at 4 p.m. ET followed by a doubleheader beginning on Saturday, April 4 at 2 p.m. ET.
