CHICAGO - Courtnee Johnson's home run coupled with RBI hits from Jackie Kisman and Morgan Muron propelled Oakland (11-14, 2-1 HL) to a 3-2 win at UIC (9-12, 1-2, HL) in the series finale on Saturday at DePaul University's Cacciatore Stadium. Erin Kownacki (7-6) once again was solid on the mound picking up her second consecutive win going 7.0 innings with three strikeouts while allowing only four hits.
Johnson finished the game going 1-for-2 with a RBI and two runs, Kisman went 2-for-4 with a RBI single while Muron hit 1-for-3 with a RBI double and run. Julia Morales and Marina Salinas also hit 1-for-1 and 1-for-4 respectively.
"The team played great today with solid defense. Erin threw a great game demanding the field and did an outstanding job," said head coach Connie Miner. "I like the kids' presence today. From the very beginning, they had a good feel and are at that point where they realize what they can do if they play consistent ball. What is amazing about today is that we had a rough second game yesterday and for them to come back today shows a lot of character and belief in what we are doing."
Despite the very windy conditions, Johnson belted a solo home run over the left field wall giving Oakland a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
In the third inning, Muron ripped a double to right center field to score Johnson. Kisman also hit a laser back to the pitcher to score Muron giving the Golden Grizzlies a 3-0 advantage.
UIC responded in the bottom of the fifth inning with two runs off a single and sacrifice fly to pull within a run at 3-2.
Kownacki and Oakland's defense extinguished the Flames' offense in the sixth and seventh inning to secure the win.
Oakland continues Horizon League play with a three-game series at Youngstown State beginning on Friday, March 27 at 4 p.m.
