OXFORD, Ohio - With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, TJ Bindus delivered a clutch bases loaded single to propel Oakland (9-11) to a dramatic 6-5 win over Dayton (11-9) on the second day of action at the 2015 Miami Invitational on Saturday inside the Miami Softball Stadium. Courtnee Johnson went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run while Sarah Hartley went 1-for-2 with a solo home run. Jackie Kisman also went 1-for-4 with a RBI triple.
Erin Kownacki (5-5) picked up the win in relief entering the game in the top of the seventh inning with a runner at second. Despite Dayton getting the bases loaded with one out, Kownacki tallied a huge strikeout and got the last batter to ground out to get out of the jam and keep the game tied at 5-5.
"Tonight was an outstanding team effort. They kept playing hard and making plays all night," said head coach Connie Miner. "We played aggressive, diving for balls, attacking the ball with Courtnee and Sarah exploding on the ball for their home runs which are still flying somewhere. We used three pitchers with Erin coming in and shutting them down. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh with two outs, TJ came up with a great at bat and base hit up the middle to win the game. A Great win against a very strong hitting team."
After a scoreless first two innings, Dayton took a 3-0 lead on four hits in the top of the third. Oakland responded in the bottom half as Kisman tripled to score Rae Beadlescomb. Hartley followed with a RBI sacrifice fly to score Kisman pulling the Golden Grizzlies within a run at 3-2.
Johnson's two-run shot over the left field fence gave Oakland a 4-3 lead in the fourth inning.
The lead would not last long and Dayton retook the lead at 5-4 with three hits in the top of the fifth inning. Oakland once again fought back as Harley's solo home run tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the frame.
After Kownacki held the Flyers at bay in the top of the seventh, Oakland went to work as Marina Salinas reached on an error by the first baseman and advanced to second. Sara Cupp and Hartley both walked to load the bases setting the stage for Bindus who then looped a ball into center field to score Salinas to win the game.
Oakland concludes invitational play on Sunday, Mar. 14 against Robert Morris at 9 a.m. and North Dakota at 1:30 p.m.
