OAKLAND SPLITS PAIR TO CONCLUDE PIRATE CLASSIC

Feb. 8, 2015

Delaware State Box Score | East Carolina Box Score

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Erin Kownacki picked up her first win of the season tossing 5.0 scoreless innings with five strikeouts to lead Oakland (2-3) to a 12-0 win over Delaware State (0-5) at the Pirate Classic on Sunday. All-Tournament Team selection Sarah Hartley and Julia Morales both went 1-for-4 with three RBI and three combined runs while Sara Cupp hit 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run. The Golden Grizzlies fell 9-1 to host East Carolina (4-1) in the second and final game of competition. For the tournament, Hartley led the team batting .412 ave. with seven hits, seven runs scored, two stolen bases, 13 put-outs and 13 assists for a perfect fielding percentage defensively.

Jackie Kisman also went 2-for-3 with three runs with Courtnee Johnson, Carah Pletscher and TJ Bindus each tallying a hit and two combined RBI.

"In the first game, I felt we did everything right with great pitching, hitting and defense against a team that is in the top of their conference every season," said head coach Connie Miner. "I felt we put the first two days together and performed exceptionally well. In the second game, we had to move some people around due to injuries so unfortunately one inning got out of hand but we still should have been able to get out of it. Every game we learned a lot from and I think the team adjusted well going 2-3. I take a lot of good things from this trip and we also have a lot to build on."

In the first inning, Oakland took a 2-0 lead courtesy of three Delaware State errors and blew the game open in the fourth scoring seven runs on five hits to take a commanding 9-0.

Cupp's two-RBI single coupled with another DSU error in the fifth inning put the Golden Grizzlies ahead 12-0 en route to the win.

In the second game against host East Carolina, Marina Salinas, Rae Beadlescomb, Johnson, Hartley and Cupp accounted for all five Oakland hits. However, the Golden Grizzlies could not overcome a costly third inning in which the Pirates scored eight runs on seven hits.

Cupp connected on her second RBI single of the afternoon to put Oakland on the board in the top of the fourth inning, but ECU answered with an unearned run in the bottom of the frame to move ahead 9-1.

Oakland travels to sunny Florida for a two-week road trip beginning at the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament on Feb. 20-22 followed by the USF Under Armour Invitational held Feb. 27 - Mar. 1.
