VALPARAISO, Ind. - RHP Tim Koons threw a complete game shutout and Jared Theisen drove in the game's only run as the Oakland baseball team (8-27, 3-14 HL) defeated Valparaiso (17-24, 7-10 HL), 1-0, Saturday afternoon at Emory G. Bauer Field. Koons is the first OU pitcher to toss a nine-inning complete game shutout since Aaron Wick in 2011 at Western Michigan.
"Tim was a bulldog wire to wire today," said head coach John Musachio. "The team came out with great energy again. We showed tremendous resilience after such a tough loss yesterday."
Koons went the distance on the mound allowing just three hits with seven strikeouts and three walks for his second victory of the season. Dalton Lundeen suffered the loss throwing a complete game of his own, allowing one run on five hits with eight strikeouts.
The Golden Grizzlies scored the only run of the game in the top of the seventh inning as Robby Enslen singled and advanced to second on an error by the catcher which allowed Theisen to rip a single to plate Enslen.
Valpo had its best scoring chance in the bottom of the seventh inning as Chris Manning led off with a walk and advanced to third on a ground ball. However, Koons was able to get the final two batters as Andrew Bynum struck out followed by Andy Burns flying out to right field to end the threat.
Oakland ended the day with one run on five hits with no errors and Valparaiso finished with no runs on three hits and committed one error.
OU will look to win the series on Sunday in the finale of the three-game set beginning at 1 p.m. ET at Emory G. Bauer Field.
