CHICAGO - Jason Hager tossed 6.0 scoreless innings, Robby Enslen finished 3-for-4 and Zach Sterry drove in three runs as the Oakland baseball team (11-30, 6-16 HL) won the series opener over UIC (23-24, 16-12 HL), 7-2, Thursday evening at Les Miller Field at Curtis Granderson Stadium. With the victory, head coach John Musachio is now tied with Paul Chapoton (1988-93) for the most wins in program history at 135.
"Very well played game by our boys tonight," said Musachio. "Jason Hager attacked the zone and got ahead of their hitters. We played strong defense and our hitters did a great job against a very good starter."
Hager earned his third win of the season throwing 6.0 innings without allowing a run, scattering just four hits and striking out four batters. UIC's Tomas Michelson took the loss surrendering four runs in 5.2 innings on seven hits with two strikeouts.
Oakland got on the board quickly as Trent Drumheller scored on a ground ball to the first baseman off the bat of Sterry in the first inning. OU added two more runs in the third inning as Sterry came up with runners on second and third and drove in both runs with a ground ball in the infield to go up 3-0.
The Golden Grizzlies put the game out of reach in the seventh inning with three runs led by a two-RBI triple by Jared Theisen followed by Brett Impemba singling up the middle to go up 7-0.
OU finished with seven runs on 11 hits and one error, while UIC had two runs on six hits and committed one error.
Oakland and UIC will play the second game of the three-game set on Friday beginning at 7:05 p.m. ET at Les Miller Field at Curtis Granderson Stadium.
