ROCHESTER, Mich. - Jared Theisen went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Tyler Pagano finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs as the Oakland baseball team (7-23, 2-12 HL) dropped the second game of a three-game series to Wright State (24-16, 17-2 HL), 11-8, Saturday afternoon at the OU Baseball Field.
"Tim Koons is normally one of our most consistent pitchers but he did not have his great stuff today," said coach John Musachio. "When that happens you need to score some runs and we did that late but our bullpen was unable to hold them. I liked how we fought at the end of the game as we were one pitch away from tying the ball game. We will use that momentum going into tomorrow's game and look to get one win from this weekend."
Trailing 11-6 in the bottom of the ninth inning, OU would cut the deficit to three runs as Jake Morton singled to left field to score two runs. Oakland would load the bases and Pagano drew a walk to make the score 11-8. Wright State would then bring in the Horizon League's leader in saves, Andrew Miller, to get a pinch-hitting Zach Sterry to fly out to left field to end the game.
Wright State took a 2-0 lead after the fourth inning as Kiesten Greene hit a RBi-single in the first inning and Michael Timm grounded out to second base to plate a run in the fourth. The Raiders pushed their led to 5-0 as Greene, Joe Ford and Brad Macciocchi had RBI-singles.
Oakland would get on the board in the seventh inning as Tyler Janish drove in a run with a double down the right-field line followed by a two RBI-single up the middle by Robby Enslen to make the score 6-3. The Raiders scored three runs in the eighth but the Golden Grizzlies responded with two runs in the bottom half as Andre Sopena hit a sacrifice fly and Pagano doubled to left field to plate Morton from first base to cut the lead to 9-6. Wright State would add two runs in the top of the ninth as Greene drove in his fifth run of the game on a two-RBI single to center field.
OU starter Tim Koons threw 5.0 innings and suffered his second loss of the season allowing five runs on 10 hits with six strikeouts. WSU's Robby Sexton tossed 6.2 innings surrendering three runs on six hits with six strikeouts for his seventh win of the season. Miller picked up his 11th save of the season for the Raiders.
Oakland will return to the field on Sunday for the series finale with Wright State beginning at 1 p.m. at the OU Baseball Field.
