ROCHESTER, Mich. - Erin Kownacki pitched the complete game shutout with seven strikeouts and Chelsea Carena scored the winning run as Oakland (13-18, 2-4 HL) defeated Cleveland State (21-15, 5-5 HL) by a slim 1-0 margin on Friday. The contest is the first of four on the weekend.
The game was a classic pitcher's duel and both teams playing great defense. Overall, Oakland left eight runners on base while Cleveland State left seven. The tiebreaker of the game would come in the bottom of the fifth inning, however, when Carena scored to take the 1-0 lead for OU. Both sides continued their exceptional defense through the rest of the game and Oakland ended with the 1-0 victory.
In the circle, Kownacki faced 28 batters in the complete game shutout. She surrendered eight hits and only one walk.
Oakland begins a three-game series on Saturday, April 26 against Youngstown State. Saturday is also Pink Day for Oakland softball and fans are encouraged to show their support for this great cause.
