OAKLAND DROPS SERIES OPENER WITH VALPARAISO, 11-3

VALPARAISO, Ind. - Meghan Tangney and Courtnee Johnson both went 2-for-3 on the day and Johnson drove in a run as Oakland (11-16, 0-3 HL) dropped an 11-3 decision to Valparaiso (16-24, 8-3 HL) on Friday at the Valpo Softball Field.

Valparaiso got on the board first with a homerun on the third pitch of the bottom of the first inning for the 1-0 advantage. Waalkes ended the half inning with three straight strikeouts and it was Oakland's turn to get on the board. The Golden Grizzlies did just that in the top of the third inning. The bases were loaded to Morgan Muron, who hit a single to shallow center field, allowing two runs to score. Johnson then stepped up with runners on second and third to record an RBI single, giving OU the 3-1 lead.

Valpo would go on to tie the contest up at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning on a two-run homer over the left field fence. The go-ahead run for the home team came in the bottom of the fifth on a double to left center and Oakland trailed 4-3, giving Valpo its second lead of the game. The Crusaders continued to capitalize on a strong surge of offense leading to seven runs scored in the bottom of the sixth to end the contest, 11-3.

Kaley Waalkes ended the game with seven strikeouts in 28 batters faced with eight runs surrendered, six of them earned. Bailee Braunreuther pitched .2 innings and gave up three runs on four hits.
