April 17, 2014

Box Score

NILES, Ohio - Spencer Marentette went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Jason Hager allowed just three runs in 6.1 innings as the Oakland baseball team (6-20, 1-9 HL) lost the opening game of a three-game series to Youngstown State (7-23, 2-7 HL), 5-4, Thursday evening at Eastwood Field.

"Learning how to win requires that each member of the team learns from mistakes made by any single member of the team," said coach John Musachio. "We all need to be mindful of applying those learning opportunities each time that situation arises again there after. When we don't embrace and apply these lessons, we don't improve as a unit."

The game was tied 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth until Kris Moules hit a walk-off single to right field to score Kevin Hix from second base. Oakland held a 4-3 lead going into the eighth inning but Youngstown State loaded the bases and tied the game on a wild pitch.

Oakland would get on the board in the first inning on an Ian Yetsko RBI-single to center field to score Trent Drumheller. YSU tied the game in the bottom half of the inning but OU responded with two runs in the fourth inning as both Jake Morton and Drumheller each hit singles to drive in a run to go up 3-1.

The Penguins tied the game in the sixth inning, but once again the Golden Grizzlies responded in the seventh inning as Mike Brosseau hit a single to right-center field to plate Robby Enslen from second base.

OU starter Hager tossed 6.1 innings allowing two earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and five walks. YSU starter Brendon Shoemake threw 5.0 innings giving up three runs on seven hits with no strikeouts. Youngstown State's Alex Frey earned the win throwing 2.0 innings without allowing a run in relief.

Oakland finished the game with four runs on 11 hits with two errors, while Youngstown State scored five runs on 10 hits with no errors.

The Golden Grizzlies will continue the Horizon League series on Friday with a single game at Eastwood Field beginning at 5:30 p.m.
