BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. - Tamara Blum gave up just two sets in her doubles and singles matches Sunday evening as Oakland posted a 6-1 victory over Valparaiso in the home finale for the Golden Grizzlies. Oakland halted a four-match slide to improve to 6-13, 2-5 HL while Valpo slipped to 2-18, 1-5 HL.
"We came out strong in doubles; I think we were really fired up," Oakland head coach Heather Redshaw said. "Then we got some quick victories in our low singles matches to get the win. It was a good effort by our team today."
Oakland came out strong in doubles, as the No. 2 team of Blum and Elizabeth Guy won the first five games on the way to an 8-1 victory. OU's No. 3 tandem of Cam Sabourin and Maxime Colen then posted an 8-2 win to get the first point of the night. With the point decided, the No. 1 doubles match did not finish, with OU holding a 6-4 lead at its conclusion.
The home team's momentum carried into singles play. Juliana Guevara was the first to finish for Oakland, posting a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles. Blum also won in straight sets at No. 4 singles, winning 6-1, 6-0. Guy then sealed the team win with her 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 5 singles.
Valparaiso got their own straight-set win at No. 3 singles, but Karine Celis answered with her back-and-fourth, 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles. All eyes then shifted to court No. 1, where Cam Sabourin buckled down for a 7-6 (4), 6-3 victory for her second straight win at No. 1 singles for the weekend.
The Golden Grizzlies conclude the 2013-14 regular season Saturday, April 19 when Oakland travels to cross-town foe Detroit for a 6 p.m. match.
