OAKLAND WINS FIRST HORIZON LEAGUE GAME IN SPLIT WITH UIC

April 12, 2014

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

ROCHESTER, Mich. - Mike Brosseau hit .600 on the day with seven RBIs, while Jake Paulson threw 8.0 innings in game two as the Oakland baseball team (6-19, 1-8 HL) earned its first-ever Horizon League victory in the nightcap of a doubleheader against UIC (14-15, 9-6 HL), 15-3, on Saturday at the OU Baseball Field. OU lost the first game of the doubleheader 16-6.

"I think that was Jake's (Paulson) best performance of the season," said head coach John Musachio. "He had all four pitches working and his breaking stuff was exceptional. Mike Brosseau is a special player and his performance really helped springboard some of the other guys. We came out with a little more edge in the second game, which is what usually brings us success."

The Golden Grizzlies exploded offensively to begin the nightcap as OU scored eight runs in the second inning. Brosseau hit his second double of the game to score two runs and later Jared Theisen would blast a three-run home run to go up 9-0. Oakland added two more runs in both the third and fourth innings as Brosseau had a RBI-double and later scored on a wild pitch in the third followed by Spencer Marentette driving in a run on a single to right field and a Theisen sacrifice fly in the fourth.

Paulson (3-2) earned his third win of the season allowing one earned run on just five hits in 8.0 innings and struck out four batters. UIC's Jack Anderson suffered the loss throwing 1.1 innings, allowing six runs on eight hits with one walk.

In game one, Oakland trailed 3-0 in the fourth inning until Marentette and Theisen each had RBI-singles to cut the lead to 3-2. OU tied the game in the sixth inning on a Theisen single to left-cent field to plate Marentette.

UIC took back the lead top of the seventh as Carl Sugihara drove in two runs with a single up the middle to go ahead 6-3, but the Golden Grizzlies once again tied the game in the bottom half of the inning as Brosseau hit his second home run of the season to left field. The Flames took the lead for good as they score 10 runs in the eighth and ninth innings led by Jake Nath driving in four runs on two singles.

OU starter Tim Koons threw 6.2 innings allowing five earned runs on nine hits and struck out eight batters. UIC's Mitchell Schulewitz earned the win throwing 2.0 innings in relief, allowing two earned runs on two hits.

The Golden Grizzlies finished the two games with 21 runs on 33 hits with four errors, while the Flames had 19 runs on 21 hits and committed one error.

Oakland will be home again on Tuesday as it hosts Olivet at the OU Baseball Field beginning at 3 p.m. before traveling to Youngstown State on Thursday for a three-game Horizon League series.
