ROCHESTER, Mich. - Jared Theisen went 1-for-3 with a run scored, while Spencer Marentette drove in a run as the Oakland baseball team (5-18, 0-7 HL) dropped its home opener to UIC (13-13, 8-5 HL), 11-1, Friday afternoon at the OU Baseball field.
"I tip my cap to UIC's Tomas Michelson as he pitched one heck of a ball game," said coach John Musachio. "I like how our hitters made adjustments but he is a ground ball machine. Tomorrow we will be more aggressive and under control from the word go."
UIC came out swinging scoring four runs in the first two innings led by a two-RBI double by Tyler Detmer in the opening inning. The Flames added three more runs in the fifth inning as Detmer hit a solo home run to left field and Carl Sugihara doubled to drive in two runs.
The Golden Grizzlies scored their only of the game in the seventh inning as Marentette laced a ball down the left-field line to score Theisen from second base.
UIC starter Tomas Michelson (4-2) earned the win throwing 8.0 innings, allowing just one run on five hits with seven strikeouts. OU starter Jason Hager (1-2) suffered the loss allowing eight runs in 4.2 innings on 11 hits.
Oakland finished with one run on five hits with two errors, while UIC had 11 runs on 15 hits and committed three errors.
Due to a poor forecast predicted for Sunday, the two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon at the OU Baseball Field to finish the three-game series.
