DAYTON, Ohio - Tim Koons threw a complete game and Zach Sterry had two hits as the Oakland Baseball team (4-10, 0-2 HL) fell to Wright State (11-10, 4-0 HL), 2-0, in a pitchers duel on Saturday at Nischwitz Stadium. OU has now lost six-straight games.
"Tim Koons threw a great game and gave us an opportunity to win," said head coach John Musachio. "We had some chances offensively but their pitcher did a nice job all game. We have to stick with our process and focus on getting a win tomorrow."
Koons threw a complete game allowing two runs on seven hits and struck out nine batters. Wright State's Joey Hoelzel threw 8.0 shutout innings, allowing just four hits, but walked five, and struck out one batter. WSU's Andrew Elliot recorded his fourth save of the season throwing the final inning allowing one walk and struck out one hitter.
The two starters did not allow a run through the first seven full innings until the Raiders scored the only two runs of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning. Brad Macciocchi led off the inning with a double followed by a RBI-single by Joe Ford as he faked a sacrifice bunt and found a hole through the Oakland bunt defense. Ford would later score on a safety squeeze by Michael Timm.
Oakland's best chance came in the eighth inning as Trent Drumheller opened the inning with a single followed by a sacrifice bunt by Robby Enslen to move him to second. Mike Brosseau would hit an infield single and Drumheller tried to score but was thrown out at home to end the inning.
The Golden Grizzlies will finish the three-game series on Sunday against Wright State beginning at 1 p.m. at Nischwitz Stadium.
