LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Zach Sterry had two hits, while Jake Morton and Robby Enslen each drove in a run as the Oakland baseball team (4-4) dropped the series finale to New Mexico State (7-5), 17-2, Sunday afternoon at Presley Askew Field. Despite the loss, OU won its first series of the season.
"Obviously not many things went our way today," said coach John Musachio. "Our goal was to come down to Las Cruces, trust our process and play pitch to pitch the entire series. We accomplished this goal and the results took care of themselves by winning three out of four games."
New Mexico State scored six runs in the second inning led by three-run home run by Kristoffer Koerper. Oakland would get on the board in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly by Morton. The Aggies added three more runs in the fourth inning as Koerper drove in two runs with a double to left-center field.
The Golden Grizzlies scored in the fifth inning on an Enslen sacrifice fly to score Trent Pell. However, NMSU would score seven runs in the fifth inning on six hits to make the score 16-2.
New Mexico State's Kyle Kilgore earned the win throwing 5.0 innings, giving up two runs, one earned, and allowed five hits. OU's Chris Van Dyke suffered the loss thrwoing 2.0 innings, giving up six earned runs on seven hits.
NMSU ended the game with 17 runs on 21 hits with one error. OU scored two runs on six hits and committed one error.
The Golden Grizzlies will be on the field next weekend as they play a four-game series at Lipscomb March 7-9 at Ken Dugan Field.
