GOLDEN GRIZZLIES LOSE CLOSE CONTEST TO HOST DAYTON, 2-1

March 15, 2014

Box Score

DAYTON, Ohio - Erin Kownacki (4-6) pitched for all six innings surrendering two runs on five hits while Shannon Cleveland led OU's offensive charge with two hits, driving in one but Oakland (10-10) fell short of Dayton (8-12) on Saturday by a score of 2-1. With the impending frigid temperatures on Sunday, the game against IUPUI has been cancelled and the Golden Grizzlies will head home a day early.

Oakland accomplished a run in the top of the first when Cleveland drilled a double to left center for an RBI. Dayton would find the equalizer in the bottom of the third to make the score 1-1 and the game became a pitcher's duel for the next two and a half innings.

OU recorded bases loaded situations in both the fifth and sixth innings with two outs, but left all runners stranded on base and Dayton added the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Oakland could not tie the contest in its last chance at the plate in the top of the seventh and the game ended 2-1 in favor of the host Flyers.

OU begins conference play next weekend at Wright State. The first round of the three-game series is slated for March 22 at 1 p.m.
