STATESBORO, Ga. - Jackie Kisman recorded a hit as did Shannon Cleveland, but it was not enough to generate offense for Oakland as the Golden Grizzlies (1-1) dropped an 11-0 decision to host Georgia Southern (1-0) on their home turf, Eagle Field.
"This is a very talented team - picked to win their conference - so I knew it was going to be challenging but (it is) not acceptable for us to give up 11 runs," commented head coach Connie Miner. "We did not do well on the mound and went through three pitchers, so it's a lesson learned that if you miss your pitches, a good team is going to take advantage. We have to be a lot sharper with our location. A couple kids did have great at bats and what I loved about it is the energy and that they kept battling and supporting each other."
Kaley Waalkes threw for 4.1 innings in the game, giving up six hits and four runs with one strikeout. Bailee Braunreuther came in as a reliever for 1.1 innings and gave up two hits and four runs while Kayla Hensel pitched for .1 inning for two hits and three runs. Both Braunreuther and Hensel recorded a strikeout a piece.
Oakland takes Eagle Field again on Saturday to play Northern Colorado again at 10 a.m. and will play the grudge match against Georgia Southern later on at 4 p.m.
