JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - Kaley Waalkes (1-1) pitched a complete game giving up just five hits with zero runs or walks in the first contest of the day while Erika Polidori notched the game-winning three-run homer against Siena as OU (2-7) split two games in the Buccaneer Challenge on Feb. 23 at Betty Basler Field. The Golden Grizzlies were victorious over Siena (1-3), 3-0 and fell to ETSU (7-5), 8-0.
The opening affair of the day proved to be a tight battle as the scoreboard remained blank through the first seven-innings. Oakland recorded three hits to Siena's five in regulation and the teams headed into the eighth inning under the international tiebreaker rule. Siena was unable to score in the top of the eighth after a foul fly was caught, a strikeout and a great play by Sarah Hartley at shortstop for the third out.
In the bottom of the eighth, Courtney Wroubel was placed on second and Rae Beadlescomb was sent in to pinch run for Chelsea Carena with Erika Polidori due up. Polidori turned on a pitch, sending it flying over the left center wall for the walk-off three-run homer and the Golden Grizzlies' first win of the weekend.
The second game was a much different result as ETSU was able to get on the board in the bottom of the third. The Bucs tallied seven runs after a couple unfortunate Oakland miscues to all but end the contest. The host team would add one more run in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the game, 8-0.
Oakland had just two hits in the nightcap from the bats of Morgan Muron and Meghan Tangney. Erin Kownacki would be charged with the loss after throwing 2.2 innings and giving up five runs on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Oakland boards the bus once more headed for Florida and continues spring break action at Ave Maria on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
