OU'S SADDI WASHINGTON PROMOTED TO ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH

Sep 3, 2013

ROCHESTER, Mich. - Oakland Assistant Basketball Coach Saddi Washington has been promoted to Associate Head Coach, announced by Greg Kampe on Tuesday. Washington enters his eighth season with the program.

"Saddi (Washington) is a great basketball coach," said Kampe. "The players love him, and he is a tremendous recruiter. He is everything you would want as a coach."

Washington takes over for Jeff Tungate who was named head women's basketball coach in July. Tungate spent the last seven seasons as the Associate Head Coach for the men's program previous to his head coaching position.

"I would like to thank Coach Kampe for his continued confidence in my abilities and contributions as a leader," said Washington. "It's an honor to serve in this program with these young men. I am looking forward to continuing our success as we transition into the Horizon League."

The Golden Grizzlies have won at least 20 games in four of the last five seasons and made five consecutive NCAA postseason appearances. Oakland advanced to the NCAA tournament in 2010 and '11, and made a run to the CollegeInsider.com Postseason tournament semifinals in 2012, setting a new league record with three postseason wins. Washington has coached three Mid-Major All-Americans over the last four seasons and came to OU in 2006.

Under Washington's tutelage, four players have become NCAA statistical champions over the last five years. Johnathon Jones became the first-ever NCAA champion for Oakland, leading the country with 8.1 assists per game in 2008-09. Reggie Hamilton scored an NCAA-best 26.2 points per game in 2011-12, becoming the first-ever scoring champion from The Summit League. Current players Travis Bader and Duke Mondy became the first-ever tandem in the league to lead the NCAA in a category, leading in 3-pointers made per game (4.2) and steals per game (3.03), respectively.
