INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Erin Galloway recorded three hits including a home run, while Erin Kownacki threw a complete game, only giving up one run, as the Oakland Softball team (4-9-1, 1-3) split a doubleheader with IUPUI (13-18, 3-8), 5-1 and 6-1, on Friday at the IUPUI Sports Complex.
"Erin Galloway was great at the plate and Erin Kownacki threw a great game in a nice league win," said coach Connie Miner. "We hit really well and our defensive was good for a great team win. In the second game we had one bad inning that we could not stop and had a lot of solid hits right at people. I'm looking forward to tomorrow as we have a chance to take the series."
Galloway got OU on the board first in game one as she blasted a solo home run to left-center field and Alivia Nikolaus pushed the lead to 2-0 in the second inning as she hit an RBI triple.
The Golden Grizzlies added three runs in the sixth inning as Chelsea Carena drove in Sarah Hartley and Whitney Weston hit a two-RBI single.
Kownacki (4-4) earned the victory as she threw 7.0 innings, giving up one earned run and surrendered only five hits and struck out four batters.
In the night cap, OU scored in the fourth inning as Galloway scored on an error by the shortstop. IUPUI tied the game in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI-double by Jazmine Pedr. The Jaguars scored five runs in the sixth inning led by two two-run home runs.
Laura Pond (0-5) suffered the lose as she threw 5.1 innings, giving up four earned runs on six hits and struck out five batters.
The final game of the series will begin tomorrow at noon at the IUPUI Softball Complex.
