Oakland Drops Doubleheader at Illinois

CHAMPAIGN, Ill.- Robby Enslen tallied five hits and scored three runs, while Mike Carson drove in three runs as the Oakland baseball team (3-18) dropped a doubleheader to Illinois (17-6), 21-8 and 3-2, on Saturday at Illinois Field.

"It's tough to lose a game when you don't get a close call against a good team," said coach John Musachio. "I'm proud of how our young men responded after a tough game one."

In the nightcap, Enslen finished 2-for-3 and Drew Betchel drove in a run. Tim Koons (2-4) threw 6.0 innings, giving up three earned runs and struck out eight batters.

The Fighting Illini scored a run in the third and fourth innings as Michael Hurwitz hit an RBI double and Brandon Hohl drove in a run with a single to left field. UI pushed the lead to 3-0 in the sixth inning as Thomas Lindauer hit a solo home run to left field.

OU cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the eighth inning as Betchel drove in Enslen with a single up the middle and Spencer Marentette would later score on a double steal as the deficit became one.

John Kravetz earned the win throwing 7.1 innings, giving up two runs on three hits.

In game one, Enslen recorded three hits and two runs, while Carson and Nolan Jacoby combined to drive in five runs. OU jumped out to the early lead as Carson hit an RBI single and Jacoby hit a double to score Carson.

The Golden Grizzlies scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning as Todd Dunham drew a bases loaded walk, followed by a Jared Theisen RBI. Carson hit a two-RBI double down the left-field line and Jacoby hit a sacrifice fly to score Theisen. OU added one run in the eighth inning as Trent Drumheller drove in Enslen on a grounder to the second basemen.

Illinois' Kevin Duchene (3-0) earned the win throwing 6.0 innings, giving up two earned runs, on seven hits and struck out four batters. The Fighting Illini scored 15 runs in the first three innings to seal the win in game one.

Oakland will play the final game of the four-game series tomorrow starting at 1:05 p.m.
