March 22, 2013

Box Score

YPSILANTI, Mich. - Mike Carson finished with two hits and scored a run, while Jason Hager threw 7.0 innings as the Oakland baseball team (3-12) dropped the opening game of a four-game set to Michigan State, 5-2, on Friday at Oestrike Stadium on the campus of Eastern Michigan.

"I thought we played a decent game today, but decent is not good enough against a quality opponent like Michigan State," said coach John Musachio. "I feel lke we had a great opportunity to seize momentum in the sixth when we had the go-ahead run in scoring position but didn't get him across. Good teams have timely hitting and that's something we are good enough to do, but havent showm it yet this year."

The Golden Grizzlies scored the first run of the game in the opening inning as Jared Theisen scored on a error by the catcher after being hit by a pitch and stealing a base. MSU answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning as Jimmy Pickens had an RBI single and Blaise Salter grounded out to the shortstop to drive in the other run.

OU tied the game in the fourth inning as Robby Enslen hit a sacrifice fly to score Carson who led off the inning with a double down the left-field line. The Spartans took back the lead in the sixth inning as Ryan Krill singled up the middle to score Salter from second.

MSU tacked on two more runs in the seventh inning as Ryan Richardson hit an RBI single and would later score on a fielding error by OU.

Hager (0-3) finished the game throwing 7.0 innings, giving up five runs, four earned, on 10 hits while striking out three batters. Michigan State's Waszak (2-1) earned the win throwing a complete game, giving up two runs, one earned, on four hits and striking out 10 batters.

The series will continue tomorrow with a doubleheader at Oestrike Stadium starting at 1:05 p.m.
