DAYTON, Ohio - Oakland's Jared Theisen, Robby Enslen and Brett Impemba each had hits as the Golden Grizzlies (2-10) fell to Dayton (4-10-1), 6-0, this Saturday at Woerner Field. OU was outhit in the game, 11-3.
"Their starter pitched a great game and kept our hitters off balance all day," said OU coach John Musachio. "We made a couple of mistakes and it cost us. (Jake) Paulson pitched well enough to win, but it's tough to win when you don't score runs."
Right-handed pitcher Noah Buettgen (1-2) tossed a complete-game, three-hit shut out for the Flyers. He struck out nine OU batters and walked none. UD's Aaron Huseman led the offensive attack, going 3-for-4, with two runs batted in and a double.
Right-handed pitcher Jake Paulson (0-3) took the loss on the mound, tossing 7.0 strong innings, giving up nine hits, five runs, three earned runs and fanned two. Right-hander Connor Mielock threw the eighth inning, surrendering the final run on a walk and two hits.
UD's Buettgen was the story, facing just two batters over the minimum, thanks to a pair of double plays. The Golden Grizzlies did not have a base runner get into scoring position all game long.
The Flyers got all the runs they needed in the bottom of the first inning. After a base hit and an error by the OU shortstop, the Flyers' Ian Hundley and Jaren Broughton posted RBI singles to give Dayton a 2-0 lead.
UD would score a run in each of the third, fifth, sixth and eighth innings to reach the 6-0 total. OU had no runs, on three hits and committed two errors, while Dayton scored six runs, on 11 hits and no errors.
The Golden Grizzlies will try and bounce back with a game versus Buffalo (9-8) at 3 p.m. today as the Flyer Classic continues on Woerner Field. Follow the action via live stats here.
